California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner Honored by University of Texas School of Engineering as "2007 Distinguished Graduate"
SACRAMENTO --- California Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner is being honored this weekend by the University of Texas - Cockrell School of Engineering as their "2007 Distinguished Graduate."
Poizner is being honored by his alma mater for outstanding achievement and innovation in his career. Before becoming one of eight constitutional statewide officials, Poizner was a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who developed GPS technology for cellular phones. His technology is now available in 300 million cell phones worldwide.
"It is an honor to be recognized by my peers and by the University which helped cultivate my passion for innovation," said Commissioner Poizner, who graduated in 1978 with top honors, including Top Male Student and Top 10 Engineering Students in the Nation.
He will be honored this weekend with a special award presentation during the university's graduation ceremony.
Poizner also received an MBA from Stanford University in 1980.
