8 If you cannot find the name and address of the backup insurancecompanyonaVSC, andadealer sellingyou the VSC cannot show you the backup insurance company’s name and address on the VSC, you should check with the CDI to make sure the VSC is legal before you buy it. Only a car dealer with a car dealer’s license from the California DMV may legally sell you a VSC issued by a VSCP. Some VSCPs ignore this law and sell VSCs to consumers over the Internet, rather than through car dealers. Companies that sell VSCs in California over the Internet are committing a felony. You should never buy a VSC over the Internet. Some VSCPs are actually owned by car manufacturers. Many VSCPs are owned by a company that also owns the VSCP’s backup insurance company.
